It’s More than Just Branding, You Have to Market Too

My blog traffic is picking up ever so slightly.

I have gone from 1-2 views a day to around 15 views a day. It was almost 2 months ago to the date that I started importing my posts from my blog directly into Medium. I figured why not try to grow it at the same time as I’m growing on Medium. The growth is very little and seemingly insignificant, but it still excites me.

The little things here and there always add up.

This morning I went over to Flipboard and added all the posts from On the Rise to a magazine I created on there. I just opened the account last week. During my first podcast conversation, my guest said that he had used Flipboard to post some of his Medium articles and some had really started to pick up traction.

I checked the Flipboard stats today.

Two views.

Another low number, but there’s still a point to doing this.

Everything has a point, even if we don’t see it yet. 

On our first trial episode of the podcast yesterday, we highlighted a recent post from one of our contributors. One of the things the writer said was when you are building a personal brand,

“You have to yell as loud as you can”

Marketing is a whole beast in itself.  I spend up to 2 hours each day writing a post, up to an hour prepping for and recording a  daily podcast, and then after all that work, I have to run around and make sure my writing is read and the podcast is heard.

I’ve avoided marketing in the past.

I ran a few unsuccessful google AdWords campaigns a few years ago for my accessories business and I also ran some Facebook ads for a short-lived t-shirt venture I dabbled in. Having podcast conversations is fun and I obviously love writing too, but when it comes down to the nitty-gritty, I’m not fond of doing the grunt work involved in marketing and advertising my personal brand.

There’s that feeling that the brand should speak for itself. But that’s somewhat of a limiting belief. I should be doing everything I can to optimize my success.

There are more than 7 billion people on the planet, certainly, I can increase my odds of reaching more.

I always thought writing would simply be the means to lead me to next thing and in many ways it has, but it’s funny because writing is also largely “the thing itself.”

It was right in front of me all along and now that I’ve found the thing that I love, I have to go all in.
