A few nights ago, I was chatting with my brother again. If you remember, he was having some qualms about college.
We were bouncing ideas back and forth about possible side hustles. Web design, dropshipping, graphic design, and online tutoring were a few things that came up.
It was funny because while we were discussing certain opportunities, he would say,
“Well, I need to take a course on graphic design then” or “I need to take a course in computer science.”
Every time he said that I was like,
“That’s fine if you do that, but seriously what you need to know is likely on YouTube…just look it up and start.”
“You’re right, you’re right.” he’d say.
Even as I was telling him, it sunk in for me too. It’s crazy, I can seriously go on the web and learn almost anything I need to know.
Just a few days ago I learned a specific skill for Adobe After Effects. Last year, I learned how to make graphics designs for t-shirts. The year before that I picked my camera and learned how to use it based on videos I watched. I’ve learned Spanish and basic French. I’ve learned how to set up Facebook and Google Adwords campaigns. I even learned how to sew from watching YouTube videos and that led me to start a business on Etsy 5 years ago.
The information is right at our fingertips and it’s largely for free. If that’s not inspiring I don’t know what is.
So back to my conversation with my brother, I didn’t think much of it at first, because usually when someone says, “You’re right, you’re right” it’s not clear what’s going to happen next.
But he surprised me today.
He told me he’s declared a college major, e-mailed the hiring department for a remote work opportunity and will be using the money from the job to help save and fund a business endeavor. He even spent some time practicing coding last night.
I have to say I’m impressed and excited. He’s on the way to creating the future he wants and that’s the part that makes me most happy.
