My First Step Toward Marketing the Podcast: I’m Working on It Tonight

It was already 3 weeks ago I wrote, “It’s More than Just Branding, You Have to Market Too.”

Since then, I added a couple more posts to Flipboard. I’ve also recently added a few posts to my Facebook page but have done nothing with Twitter and Instagram for an eternity.

Here’s where my following count stands on “The Big 3”:

Facebook: 97 followers.

Instagram: 39 followers

Twitter: 33 followers

I know those can be better.  I’m not lazy but I’d definitely say I’m undermotivated in the marketing arena. I find it ironic I can find the energy to spend 3-4 hours writing and podcasting a day but not take a few minutes to make a unique post for my Facebook wall.

I’ve often heard that creatives underperform when it comes to marketing the stuff they create. However, distribution is one of the most essential parts of creating a brand.

My podcast co-host and I had a conversation about it yesterday and he wrote about it here.

Although I  would love to hire a virtual assistant to just handle all of this, it’s too early for me to foot the expense. So I’m going to have to take my own advice on this one, “Just Start”.

And right now, in the middle of writing this post, I am. I’m working on my content marketing plan.

Here we go…

The few posts I have promoting the podcast on Facebook, look like this:

It’s just a standard link and it looks pretty boring. It’s not obvious what the link is for without reading the text.

For over a year now that I’ve been wondering how to make a podcast graphic with the animated wave lines.

I wanted the posts to look more like this:

Okay, so I need to do so more tweaking with fonts and I’m going to select a neutral photo, but with a 5-minute google search, I found a site that could animate an image exactly like I wanted. I can upload a short audio clip from the podcast to Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, etc and my fans will now have a better idea of what I’m linking to.

It will look much nicer.

I don’t know if I’m going to use this site specifically but it if you’d like to check it out you can visit it here. They have free and paid plans.

A lot of what I need to to do is put some time into learning how to remaster my content for various platforms. Just sharing the links is not going to cut it.

I’ve always loved how people like Tiffany Sun or Nicolas Cole have used their own personal photos as a branding strategy on their Medium accounts. When I first joined that was my strategy too. I told myself all my posts were going to include my own personal photo. And if you go way back, you will find 4-5 posts like that before I stopped.

I’m thinking about starting it up again. Maybe not all the pictures have to be me, but it would be nice if I could get 2-3 a week. The cool thing is I can use the photos for all the platforms and they can be turned into quotes, animated podcast graphics and of course the header pictures for Medium stories.

This week, I’m going to start with the podcast graphics and next week I’ll see where I’m at. I’ll be sure to write updates about my social media growth along the way.

Thank you for reading!
